Dumbarton Castle was sited on rock overlooking the Clyde.  It had a well protected harbour and Mary Queen of Scots left from here in 1548 on a French galley to travel for her education to France.

With Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned in England, Lord Fleming held the Castle on her behalf. On 1 April 1571, Captain Thomas Crawford scaled the walls in a fog, to regain control for Regent Lennox.
